10 steps to winterize your house

Ten Tips to Winterize Your Home

I get that it is Fall.  The days are so much shorter now; the sun doesn’t peak over the Cascade Mts until 7:45 AM or so.  I know that will change in early November when daylight savings time comes to its annual end.  Yet, all good hints that colder weather is just around the corner.

But what really reminded about winterizing … my furnace came on.  I found myself wandering around my house looking for the source of what I thought was a most rude and unusual sound. Ah! I discovered it was the furnace.

Here are ten tips.  You might consider adding some of them to your to-do list.

1.            Inspect your furnace
2.            Prepare your fireplace
3.            Inspect exterior doors and windows
4.            Inspect your roof, gutters and downspouts
5.            Service weather-specific equipment … like lawn mowers and snow shovels
6.            Check your foundations (of your house, not your personal self)
7.            Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
8.            Inspect plumbing … outside hose bibs, water irrigation systems, etc
9.            Do some yard work … plant spring flower bulbs now, for example
10.          Prepare an emergency kit
